Giltwood Regency Girandole Mirror --ON HOLD

Giltwood Regency Girandole Mirror --ON HOLD

$4,500.00

Glorious late 18th or early 19th century gilt wood and gesso girandole Regency (possibly Federal) mirror, with convex mirror framed by ebonized reed and two candle brackets. Beautiful carved frame. Topped with a majestic eagle perched on promontory of rocks. The eagle is bearing a chain and ball from its mouth, a symbol of Naval prowess, and flanked by acanthus leaves and flowers. English or American origin, though more likely English. European provenance.

Fair antique condition; there appear to be several types of earlier gilding touch ups/re-gilding as well as some gilding losses and repairs to the carvings. There are some minor age-related structural breaks where carvings are attached. Ball shows wear and chips and has been lightly regilded. We have chosen to leave this wonderful mirror in the condition in which it arrived, in order to let it stay as close to its own journey through the centuries as possible before sending it on to new owners. It would bring a lovely grandeur and a touch of real history to any setting.

And it has a most beautiful lustre in the afternoon sunshine, warm and golden...
