Schleswig-Holstein 18th Century Giltwood Rococo Mirror with Ho Ho Bird

Schleswig-Holstein 18th Century Giltwood Rococo Mirror with Ho Ho Bird

$22,000.00

A rare and stunning 18th century giltwood and gesso Rococo mirror from Schleswig-Holstein, crested by a graceful Ho Ho bird feeding on a cluster of grapes, flanked by classical mythological motifs of more grapes, golden eggs, and a bow and quiver at the base.

The Schleswig-Holstein region of Denmark/Germany was known for its excellence in mirror craftsmanship in the 18th century, requiring a detailed apprenticeship with a master craftsman in order to qualify to create such a mirror. This example is particularly rare and particularly beautiful in its large size and detailed carving. Similar pieces appear in museums in Germany and the motifs hearken to those used in the It is also noteworthy for the dual tone of its gilding, in both the regular gold tones and then a mainly untarnished silver tone, which may indicate the original use of white gold leaf.

Good antique condition. Structurally sound. Age appropriate wear, chips, losses to gilding and minor repairs to carvings. The bow is partly missing from the base carving. The golden tones of gilding have clearly seen several layers, and were re-worked probably sometime in the 20th century, while the white/silver tones look to be original. Plate of later date, with some minor blemishes.
